SUNDAY - MAY 21, 2017
TOK, ALASKA --- a beautiful little Alaska town - population 1435 with the name that rhymes with poke. The gateway into and out of Alaska! Tok began as a construction camp on the Alcan Highway in 1942 and it was known as "Million Dollar Camp" in reference to the cost of equipping and maintaining it.
We are staying at the Golden Bear Motel - home of Bruce the Grizzly!!
This might be the closest we get to see a Grizzly bear since we have seen none along the way and we are told that they are out there--- just not out there where we can see them. But maybe that is OK too!!!
The rooms are spacious and very comfortable with a large bathroom, continental breakfast and wifi!!! What more could a person ask for???
And the host ladies - Sisters Cherish and Heather are super!!! They both moved here from different parts of the US and they love it here -- so much peace and quiet and no busy city life. They have told us so many interesting things about the area that we have spent a lot of time in their lobby!! They might be happy when we leave!!!
The town of Tok does not have a mayor but is run by the town people. I guess they have elected committees that make decisions about funding and spending and if they are not doing a great job - they get voted out!!!
The motel has an outside furnace that can burn 3 foot long longs and can be filled very full. In the winter when it is -60 degrees they have to refill it about every 4 hours.
The welcoming committee on the porch!!
The vehicles around here are all electric!!! What -- isn't that what the plug in is for????
We met another new friend this morning at breakfast. Linda Tally is a retired nurse from Little Canada, Minnesota, just north of St. Paul. She is traveling solo with her camper and on her way to Anchorage to meet her sister and then do some sightseeing around the state. What a delightful lady. Another friend to keep in touch with via Facebook!
Sunday is not complete without worshipping at a church with fellow believers. We went to Faith Chapel, a small non-denominational church. There were about 30-40 people there and the singing was awesome and included familiar songs and also the doxology!
The preacher had a wonderful message and I really enjoyed listening to him.
I Corinthians 2:9 - Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard , neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.
Again, we can see God's working in all places and in the hearts of man.
And so ends another day on this great Alaska adventure. Tomorrow morning we are heading North to Chicken, Alaska - after we do some laundry. We are out of underwear!!!
