THE ALASKA PIPELINE & VALDEZ, ALASKA

MAY 13, 2017 - Saturday --

The day started earlier than usual since Alaska is an hour later than Washington and my body clock!!!  Oh well --- we are up and at 'em!!

We left Tok, Alaska and headed south on Highway 1 towards Valdez.  It was a bit foggy at that time but about 20 miles down the road the sun appeared -- not sure if it ever went to bed last night - but it was up bright and early.

Again --- so much beautiful scenery that it is just hard to put into words.  Around every curve it is WOW!!!  Only a God as great as ours could do this and have all of the little details worked out - the intricate detail of the leaves and grasses and flowers and every plant out there, the absolutely amazing workings of every living creature from the mosquito to the mighty Grizzly Bear and what is really amazing is that when I look at all that snow out there --- there is not one flake that is identical to another!!!  WOW again!!!!  We should be so humbled just at the thought of all of His handiwork and His love!!

Erwin & Alma --- the above picture is for you!!!!  We were so thankful to be behind him --- in our Buick!!!!

We drove for about 2 hours and then stopped in Glenallen, Alaska at a little family owned country diner for breakfast!!  I FINALLY had my Biscuits & Gravy!!!!  That is the yummiest thing on the menu!!

One of the things that Howard really wanted to see was the HAARP site.  He has been reading a lot about this on the internet and it is really something at what occurs here.  If you are wondering about it, please look it up and I also suggest reading a book called, "Angels Don't Play This HAARP!!"

One of the things that we have really noticed on the entire trip through British Columbia, The Yukon and now into Alaska is how many homes and businesses are closed and so very run down.

This family was going up and down the ditch picking up trash along the road.  They said it was the areas cleanup day.  The kids were very happy to have a Hi Chew treat!!!  I usually carry a bag or two of those in my car!  Hate to get hungry while driving and it was fun to share these with those little workers!

Numerous absolutely breathtaking waterfalls along this road.

The famous Alaska Pipeline -- stretching from Prudhoe Bay aka Deadhorse, Alaska & Valdez, Alaska.  We saw it in several places along the road but this was the only place where we could drive this close to it.

We were told at the Info Center about the Worthington Glacier so when we came by it we had to stop and touch it.  Something tells me that we probably should have walked a little further in the snow but this looked enough like a glacier to us that we called it good.

There are several areas along the road that still have snow.  The temps are in the 50s and 60s but it gets quite cool at night yet so guess that probably explains  the residual snow.

There are a lot of dead evergreens and other kinds of trees all through the countryside and they add their own beauty to the landscape!!

Valdez, Alaska

Home of the End of the Alaska Pipeline.
We could only go so far down the road -- since we are really NOT official.  But we wanted to see this.
I had hoped that there would have been a ship being loaded with the oil but there were none in sight!!

Valdez is an interesting little town - home to a lot of fishing boats and also to a part of Lynden Transport.  In 1964 a major earthquake created a tsunami that caused the massive destruction of Valdez and claimed 33 lives.  The original town was pretty much destroyed so the New Valdez was built a few miles down the road.  The water in this bay is an almost clear light blue.

We left Valdez and decided that we were going to make it all the way to Anchorage tonight.  Mostly because there is a church here that we want to go to tomorrow and we didn't want to have to drive too far in the morning!!  Again - the scenery was beautiful -- the road did narrow and get very twisty and turny but it was still beautiful and along the way we saw BullWinkle up close!!  He was on the shoulder of the road!!!

It was a long, skinny almost snakelike and yet puffy looking glacier, just winding its way down the valley.

The Mailbox of the Glacier View School - a school out in the middle of almost nowhere!!

And you can take the boy off of the farm but you can't take the farm out of the boy!!!!

And so ends another day on this Alaska trip. We are staying 2 nights here in Anchorage at the Extended Stay America!  And sorry friends --- no stocking hats today.  I drove quite a bit and just looked out the window!!  Now I have to make up for lost time!!

Good night!!  Tonight the sun beat me to bed!!!  It is 1 AM here and now it is time to hit the proverbial hay --- but I think a king size bed will feel much better.
